UC Davis Health trauma surgery team prepared for COVID-19

(SACRAMENTO)

As the Sacramento region’s only level 1 trauma center for adults and children, UC Davis Medical Center has the surgical team and facilities to care for all injured patients in our region. These capabilities are not compromised in any way as UC Davis Health treats patients with COVID-19 and prepares for a potential surge of additional patients with the disease.

Trauma surgeons at UC Davis Health are fully prepared and ready to care for injuries patients during the COVID-19 crisis. Trauma surgeons at UC Davis Health are fully prepared and ready to care for injuries patients during the COVID-19 crisis.

“Our patients can be confident that the best trauma team in the region will be there for them when needed, including during the current crisis,” said Joseph Galante, chief of trauma and acute care surgery at UC Davis Health.

Here are a few examples of the ways that Galante, his team and his colleagues are prepared to assist:

  • Operating rooms are set aside for injured patients who need surgery
  • The UC Davis Medical Center remains available 24/7 for transfers for trauma care
  • Collaborations with UC Davis surgical specialty teams — from burn to vascular to orthopaedics — continue as needed
  • The hospital visitation policy has been revised to limit the spread of infection
  • All resuscitation areas are equipped with protective equipment for medical personnel
  • The Surgical ICU team can provide advanced respiratory care, including extracorporeal life support, to patients with severe respiratory failure, a potential outcome of COVID-19
  • Physician and nurse leaders of all inpatient units meet daily to discuss patient needs and care plans
  • Military partners in trauma care, who always work side-by-side with the UC Davis team, contribute extra critical care specialists to UC Davis Medical Center to help care for COVID-19 patients
